PHILOSOPHY

Overall, I believe interaction with students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, is the key factor around which an academic career is built. Although research efforts may often take priority in one's work, I feel strongly that quality research is intimately dependent upon a commitment to teaching at all levels. To me, one of the fundamental attractions of science is its inherent demand for the development and communication of ideas. A strong teaching commitment ensures that this demand is met consistently and dependably. I always find teaching very challenging, enjoyable and rewarding. Whether it is one-on-one discussion of research results with a postgraduate student/fellow, or a lecture to a group of students, teaching is the most dynamic aspect of work.

POSTGRADUATE

I currently supervise 5 Ph.D. students. In total I have supervised 13 Honours/Bachelor of Medical Science students. Nine out of 13 students obtained first class Honours and scholarships to do Ph.D. My former postdoctoral fellows/Ph.D students have gone to, or are going to go to, excellent overseas groups/labs. Almost every student who has worked under my supervision has published one or more manuscript in international journals and all of them have presented their work at both national and international meetings.

OTHER

I have examined more than 10 Ph.D. theses and moreover, I have served as a general examiner for the department which involves examining all the Honours thesis submitted for the year. In addition to this I have served as specialist examiner for many Honours thesis submitted within and outside University of Western Australia. There are a number of other areas in which I have significant contact with undergraduate and postgraduate students. I am a member of the Postgraduate Committee of the department and this has enabled considerably more interaction with postgraduate students in addition to those I supervise. One important role is active participation at student seminars, including assessment of presentations of Honours students. Current and past student list is available here.
